Scegliendo come ambientazione la campagna e i paesi del Casentino, la Perodi ripopola i boschi e le strade di personaggi improbabili e fantastici, protagonisti di storie mozzafiato, senza mai esplicitare alcun intento pedagogico e moralistico, ma assecondando piuttosto una sua istintiva e aperta partecipazione all’immaginario infantile, che ammette serenamente l’esistenza fantastica dell’oscuro e del misterioso. Il coinvolgimento è assicurato. «Dovete sapere che tanti, ma tanti anni fa, viveva ad Arezzo un celebre armaiolo, nominato ser Baldo. Quest’uomo era tanto abile nell’arte sua, che i re, i principi, i duchi e quanti signori che erano allora in Italia volevano spade, scudi, pugnali e armature uscite dalle sue mani, perché non soltanto sapeva fabbricar lame di acciaio solide e forbite, ma le ornava d’impugnature di finissimo lavoro.» Emma Perodi nacque a Firenze nel 1850. Si spostò poi a Roma e nel 1883 assunse la direzione del Giornale per i bambini. Scrisse articoli, novelle, racconti, opere per adulti e fu traduttrice, ma dedicò la sua vita quasi esclusivamente alla letteratura per l’infanzia. Morì a Palermo nel 1915.
